Developer Edition is free Production org provided by Salesforce to test and work with the new releases without affecting your live environment.

Trailhead Playground is a Salesforce org to test the salesforce features without affecting live environment. Sounds similar right? But the playground is made specifically for Trailhead to complete the hands-on challenges with few pre installed packages like tools for installing packages, finding username and resetting your password.

Steps to create Developer Edition:

* Go to https://developer.salesforce.com/signup

* Fill out the form.

* The username should be unique to all the Salesforce orgs.

* Submit the form. The verification mail will be sent to the given e-mail.

* From the link in that mail, create the password.

Steps to create Trailhead Playground:

* Click the profile icon from your Trailhead account.

* Select ‘Hands-On Orgs’ from the dropdown.

* On the next page click the ‘Create Playground’ button.

* Name your Trailhead Playground and submit.

* The playground will be created and automatically linked to your Trailhead account.

* Maximum of 10 playgrounds are allowed per Trailhead account.
